Like its counterparts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokiomarinehd.com\/en\/release_topics\/release\/k82ffv0000008juk-att\/20200928_e_v2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tokio Marine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sompo-hd.com\/~\/media\/hd\/en\/files\/news\/2020\/e_20200923_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sompo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, MS&amp;AD\u2019s position is a misleading attempt to brand itself as sustainable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-quote-item\">\n        <div class=\"quote-author\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"name\">Yuki Tanabe<\/h4><div class=\"title\">Program Director at the Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society (JACSES)<\/div>        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"quote-text\">\n\t\t\t<p>\"SOMPO, Tokio Marine and MS&amp;AD have adopted entry level coal policies that are just at the start line, now they must race to the top to ensure consistency with the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. The three insurers should strengthen their coal policies and commit to not underwrite insurance for any new coal-fired power projects.\u201d<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The newly adopted MS&amp;AD corporate statement on sustainable business activities states that MS&amp;AD\u00a0 \u201cin principle, will not underwrite or invest in new coal-fired power plants,\u201d unless deemed necessary for a \u201cstable energy supply of the country concerned.\u201d As a result, it leaves the door wide open for the company to continue to engage in business as usual, engaging with coal power companies and underwriting projects around the world, without regard for the earth\u2019s finite resources and communities affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-quote-item\">\n        <div class=\"quote-author\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"name\">Takayoshi Yokoyama<\/h4><div class=\"title\">Leader of 350.org Japan<\/div>        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"quote-text\">\n\t\t\t<p>\"MS&amp;AD\u2019s coal position announced today is just as weak as its counterparts in terms of coal investments and underwriting. It is vital that MS&amp;AD and other mega insurers adopt more robust policies that abolish coal fired power stations completely by 2030.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A group of Japanese NGOs from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No Coal Japan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> campaign is <a href=\"http:\/\/jacses.org\/en\/175\/\">also responded<\/a>, by urging the company to withdraw all support from companies and projects associated with the expansion of coal power and mining, including the Vung Ang 2 project in Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most significantly, MS&amp;AD\u2019s statement of principles fails to incorporate the entire value chain of coal, and fails to offer targets for divesting from companies or assets with significant exposure to coal, as per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coalexit.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Coal Exit List<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It is also not clear whether this new policy is applicable to all of its corporate business affiliates currently specializing in resource extraction and energy, including MS Amlin. Despite the company\u2019s stated commitment to uphold human rights, the new set of principles introduced by MS&amp;AD do not take into account internationally accepted standards to respect indigenous peoples\u2019 rights to free, prior and informed consent and self-determination over ancestral territories.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-quote-item\">\n        <div class=\"quote-author\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"name\">Tanya Roberts-Davis<\/h4><div class=\"title\">Insure Our Future's East Asia Finance Advisor<\/div>        <\/div>\n        <div class=\"quote-text\">\n\t\t\t<p>\"Although MS&amp;AD trumpets its aspirational commitment to addressing climate change, its investment and underwriting activities fail to mirror such lofty ideals.
