The scorecard annually assesses the climate performance of global insurers based on their fossil fuel exclusion policies. This year, new research also reveals the extent to which insured losses can be attributed to climate change and presents data on the state of renewable energy insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 Key Findings<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more than half of 28 insurers assessed \u2013 including <\/span><b>MS&amp;AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Tokio Marine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><b>climate-attributable insured losses surpassed fossil fuel premiums underwritten.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This highlights how <\/span><b>the accelerating impacts of climate change are taking their toll on insurers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For MS&amp;AD and Tokio Marine, commercial fossil fuel clients represent only around 1% of total premiums underwritten. This raises serious questions about why these insurers continue to support the fossil fuel industry\u2019s reckless oil and gas expansion which is exacerbating climate risks to the rest 99% of the companies\u2019 portfolios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 also saw the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1dpnxnvv2go\"><b>breaching of the critical 1.5\u00b0C global warming limit<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the first time, with the number of people affected by extreme heat \u2013 made three times likelier due to climate change \u2013 reaching <\/span><b>5 billion worldwide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate-Related Insurance Damages Account for Over One-Third of Total Losses in the Past 2 Decades<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research commissioned by Insure Our Future, and carried out by SEO Amsterdam Economics, revealed that approximately <\/span><b>$600 billion insurance losses over the past 20 years can be attributed to climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, amounting to<\/span><b> over one-third of total weather-related insurance losses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This highlights the staggering climate cost-burden on communities as insurance companies pass on their losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate-attributed insurance losses have been growing at an <\/span><b>average annual rate of 6.5% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over the last decade, outpacing the growth of insured losses (4.9%) and <\/span><b>expected to continue rising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 38% of Total Economic Losses from Extreme Weather Disasters in 2023 was Insured<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swiss Re reports that only <\/span><b>38% of the total economic losses from extreme weather disasters were insured<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This finding underscores the unjust cost burden faced by uninsured communities, while insured communities also face higher premiums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising cost of home insurance is also a serious issue, with premiums <\/span><b>increasing at double-digit rates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in countries such as <\/span><b>Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the U.S., the UK, and Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional Standpoint: Asia<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the top 10 insurance companies providing coverage to the fossil fuel industry, <\/span><b>8 are based in Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggesting the key role played by Asian insurers in climate change mitigation on the global stage. Three Japanese companies\u2014<\/span><b>Tokio Marine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>SOMPO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>MS&amp;AD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are ranked in the top 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by Howden indicates that there is a big insurance gap that threatens to bottleneck up to 10 trillion USD of climate transition investments by 2030. As the U.S. may retreat from climate action, this presents an opportunity for Asian financial institutions to build renewable energy underwriting expertise and capture global market share<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of December 2024, the insurance industry lags significantly, with no major players aligned with a 1.5\u00b0C pathway.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese Insurers\u2019 Performance<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global action on climate remains slow, though there have been gradual changes to insurers\u2019 climate policies. This section provides an overview of the three major Japanese insurance companies evaluated in the scorecard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokio Marine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rank: 15\/26<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall score: 1.37\/10<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokio Marine, the 15th largest fossil fuel underwriter in the world, announced an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/global.insure-our-future.com\/tokio-marines-strengthened-climate-policy-does-not-go-far-enough\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engagement policy requiring clients with high carbon emissions to develop decarbonization plans by 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, <\/span><b>the company still permits new insurance contracts for general oil and gas projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SOMPO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rank: 16\/26<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall score: 1.27\/10<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sompo has <\/span><b>adopted restrictions on coal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, unlike its Japanese peers, on <\/span><b>tar sands companies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, <\/span><b>the company still insures new oil and gas projects without any restrictions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is known to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/japan.insure-our-future.com\/en\/2024\/07\/09\/sompo-stop-underwriting-rio-grande-lng\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major insurer for the Rio Grande LNG project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2025, Sompo updated its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sompo-hd.com\/en\/csr\/esg\/product\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESG Considerations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> policy, saying it will refer to international standards such as FPIC (Free, Prior and Informed Consent). However, to align with the Paris Agreement&#8217;s goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5\u00b0C, <\/span><b>this target needs further strengthening to 45%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fossil fuel premiums make up under 2% of total premiums on average.
